How to prepare yourself to be a virtual assistant: three things you may not have thought about

In order to be a virtual assistant you probably already know the basics of how to prepare and what you will need: self-discipline, an office, computer skills, and a reliable computer. However, there are many more things that you will need outside of basic skills as well, so before you quit your day job to be a virtual secretary you may want to make sure you have these items ready to go.

Online bank account

Many people think about how great it will be to work from home and get paid, but few actually realize that when you work in the virtual world you will not receive a standard paycheck.

Since you are employed online most employers will expect to pay you online, thus you may want to look into opening a PayPal account which is by far the most standard form of online payment.

Great long distance carrier

When projects get complicated your employer is going to want to reach you by phone. Even when projects are not complicated most employers will still expect regular correspondence by phone since they are depending on you for their business.

However, the chances that your client is going to live in your time zone is very unlikely which means you will be paying for long distance. It might be worthwhile to consider purchasing a business cell phone line for this reason.

Software packages: MS Office, Quickbooks, Adobe

Just as you would not rely on an old computer to process your daily duties, an old software package is not going to cut it. In the internet world you have to stay updated with all major software so be prepared to update frequently, and yes this may include your operating system as well!
