How to Apply For an Export License

When you are trying to sell internationally, a wonderful way to open up new revenue streams for your small business is selling abroad.  You will find that your dream can be quickly distinguished with the government stepping in.  Ensure that the US Government considers whatever you are exporting legal.  You can sell endless products abroad if you make sure you obtain the proper license to do so.

Do not be afraid of the word “export license” for the majority of US exports do not need a license.  However, you must understand what is regulated and is a matter of classifying your product(s) and where they may end up.  I highly suggest that you Google “Department of Commerce” and this will bring you to the export controls website.  On this website, you will find a specific breakdown on licensing.

You can apply for an export license online.  You will need to apply for a personal identification number as well as other trivial things.  Keep in mind you are dealing with the government and this is not the same as shopping for products online.

You need to understand the law and how the law applies to your exporting plan for your business.  You can find the government export regulations online which have been compiled within a database.  You need to read some of the chapters of the “Export Admin Regulations” which is where you will find what goods fall under the law and which countries the law does not apply to.

If you are interested in exporting, I highly recommend you take a class on this topic.  The US government offers cheap classes on exporting specific goods.  You will want to review the course descriptions ensuring that it applies to your business as well as the costs and locations.

Here  Are  Some  Helpful  Tips -:

Do not get frustrated.  The government regulations are very detailed however, most relate to a small number of exports and a handful of countries the United States deem a problem.

Licenses tend to apply to military items and particular technologies, you will need to ensure that you can stamp “NLR” (No License Required) on your export documents and this means you will have to check.

Ensure that you keep meticulous records.  Record keeping is a huge part of performing exporting.  Ensure that you always maintain records minimally five years back.
